The experience

The drive from Muscat takes two hours to reach Wadi Bani Khalid, a mountain oasis ringed by palm trees and dramatic rock formations. From the parking area, a 15-minute walk brings you to the pools themselves: crystal-clear water fed by the mountains, where you can swim and float while the cliffs rise around you. This is the core of the morning: time in the water and space to sit in the shade.

After Wadi Bani Khalid, the tour moves into Wahiba Sands. You'll stop at a traditional Bedouin house where the guide arranges authentic Omani coffee and sweet dates while you look at handmade crafts. A camel ride across the dunes is available if you want it, though it costs extra and runs about 7 to 10 minutes. The tour then positions you on the dunes for sunset: the light turning the sand gold before the drive back to Muscat begins. The return journey takes roughly two hours.

The full day runs about eight and a half hours from pickup to drop-off. Your guide speaks English and Arabic, and the vehicle is a 4WD with air conditioning. Water is included. Bring sunscreen and a hat. If dune bashing interests you (a separate high-speed 4WD experience across the sand), you can arrange that in advance through the desert camp for an additional fee.
