The experience
The day starts with a drive east from Muscat toward the Wahiba Sands, stopping briefly in the village of Fanja before entering the desert proper. Once there, you leave the main road and drive off-road across stretches of sand and towering dunes in a 4x4 vehicle, seeing the landscape shift from settlement to pure desert. The guide stops at a traditional Bedouin house where you try Omani coffee and dates. Camel riding is available here as an optional add-on. You'll watch the sunset from the top of the dunes before the drive back begins.
After sunset, the route turns toward Wadi Bani Khalid, one of Oman's largest and most visited wadis. The canyon itself is the draw: steep rock walls frame a series of clear freshwater pools deep enough to swim in. Bring water shoes, a towel and sunscreen. The wadi is open for swimming and sunbathing, and many travelers spend time cooling off in the pools before the return journey to Muscat. Lunch at a local restaurant happens mid-tour and is your own cost.
