The experience

The tour starts before dawn. Your guide picks you up from your Muscat hotel at 4 AM and drives toward Wahiba Sands, arriving in time to watch the sun rise from the top of the dunes. The light changes the color of the sand as it climbs, and the scale of the desert becomes clear once you're standing on it. After sunrise, you visit a traditional Bedouin house where Omani coffee and dates are served free. Trying on traditional Omani dress is optional. A camel ride through the dunes follows: around ten minutes on the animal itself, though the experience of being out on the sand with the dunes around you lasts longer.

The second half of the day shifts to water. You drive toward Wadi Bani Khalid, one of Oman's largest wadis, where steep canyon walls frame pools of clear freshwater. You can swim in the cool water, sunbathe on the rocks, or walk deeper into the wadi to explore hidden caves. The contrast between the dry desert morning and the water-filled canyon is sharp. All travel time between the three main stops is built into the eight-hour total, so there's no surprise about how much of the day is spent in the 4WD vehicle.

What’s included

  • Hotel pickup and drop-off in the Muscat area.
  • transportation in a 4WD vehicle.
