The experience
Wadi Hawr sits about two and a half hours' drive from Muscat, and the journey itself crosses changing terrain as you leave the city behind. The wadi is a valley carved by water, with rocky landscapes, clear pools and patches of green that make it feel like an oasis. You'll hike the trails here and swim in the pools. Bring a towel and change of clothes, as the water is cold and clean. The guide will show you the best spots and explain the landscape as you move through it.
After Wadi Hawr, the tour heads to Wahiba Sands, where the terrain shifts to golden dunes. You'll stop at a traditional Bedouin house set into the sand, where you can sit inside an authentic tent, drink Arabic coffee and eat fresh dates. If you want to ride a camel across the dunes, that's available for about 3 OMR per person for a short ride of seven to ten minutes. You pay the camel owner directly. The dunes themselves are the main event here: vast, sculpted by wind, and a sharp contrast to the water and greenery of the wadi.
The drive back to Muscat takes roughly two hours. The full day runs about eight and a half hours from pickup to drop-off, so plan for an early start and a late return. Water is provided throughout, and the 4WD vehicle handles the rough terrain and sand without trouble. The guide speaks English and can answer questions about Omani geography, Bedouin culture and what you're seeing along the way.
