The experience
The drive from Muscat to Nizwa takes about two hours, giving you time to settle in before the tour begins. Nizwa Fort, built in the 17th century by Imam Sultan bin Saif Al Yarubi, sits at the heart of the historic city: its massive round tower offers panoramic views over the town and surrounding mountains, and you can explore underground passages and traditional Omani architecture inside. The fort is the anchor of the day, a stronghold that once protected the city and now holds exhibits on Oman's past.
After the fort, you'll walk through Nizwa Souq, one of Oman's oldest and most active markets. The narrow passages fill with stalls selling local crafts, spices, silver jewelry, pottery, frankincense, and dates: the kind of place where you move at your own pace, stopping to look or to buy. From there, the tour moves into the villages. Al Hamra sits at the foot of the Hajar Mountains with mud-brick houses dating back 200 to 400 years, many still inhabited, their narrow alleyways preserved almost unchanged. Misfat Al Abriyeen, higher up in the mountains, is built of stone instead of mud brick, with houses stacked on the mountainside and terraced farms of date palms and bananas below them, watered by a traditional falaj irrigation system that locals still use.
Your guide speaks English and Arabic, and the tour includes water and transportation from anywhere in the Muscat area. The day is built for all fitness levels, though Misfat Al Abriyeen does involve walking through the village and its terraces. Children from age one are welcome, and infant seats are available if you need one. The fort entrance fee (5 OMR or 13 USD per person) is paid on site, as is any lunch you choose to buy along the way.
