The experience
The tour departs Muscat heading south to Nizwa, Oman's old capital. Nizwa Fortress sits at the center: a military stronghold built to withstand siege, now a museum where you walk the interior and climb to views of the ancient town and the mountains beyond. The fortress is the anchor of the morning, and entry is separate from the tour price. From there you move to Nizwa Souq, one of the country's oldest marketplaces, where separate blocks house fruit, vegetables, meat and fish. The energy and the goods on offer give a clear picture of how the town has traded for centuries.
The afternoon shifts to the villages. Al Hamra is a 400-year-old town that grew up around an abandoned settlement estimated to be 700 to 1,000 years old: the ruins sit untouched beneath and around the modern structures, so the layers are visible as you walk. Misfah Al Abriyeen sits 1,000 meters up in the foothills, a mountain village built around a Falaj water system that feeds the surrounding vegetation. Marked footpaths run through the village. The guide will point you toward them, and you set your own pace through what you want to explore. The return to Muscat takes the afternoon into evening.
This is a shared tour, so you travel with other bookings. The vehicle is a 4x4, minivan or coach depending on group size. Fuel, pickup from the Muscat area, the English-speaking guide and water during the day are included. You'll need to arrange lunch separately, and the fortress entry fee (5 OMR) is paid on arrival.
