The experience
Pickup starts at 8:00 AM from your Muscat hotel, and the drive takes you inland toward Nizwa. Nizwa Fort anchors the morning: the structure dates back several centuries and showcases traditional Omani defensive architecture. Towering walls, arrow slits, and concealed traps designed to protect against intruders. The central tower is the main draw. Climbing to the top rewards you with panoramic views of the city and the landscape stretching outward. The fort's strategic location, visible from the height, explains why it held such importance in Oman's past.
After the fort, you move through Nizwa Souk, a marketplace that has functioned as a trading hub for centuries. The souk splits into sections: a vibrant food market with fresh produce, herbs and spices; a general marketplace where locals and visitors browse stalls; and on Fridays, a livestock market where farmers bring goats, cows and camels for sale. The livestock trading offers a direct look at rural life in Oman. The souk's layout and rhythm stay much as they have for generations, though the mix of visitors has shifted.
The afternoon turns toward Al Hamra, an old village at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. The buildings are mud-brick, built in the Yemeni style, arranged in rows of two and three stories. Many houses in the upper parts stand abandoned, creating an atmospheric walk, especially at sunset when the honey-colored walls seem to blend together. From Al Hamra, the route climbs to Misfat Al Abriyeen, a village perched 1,000 meters above sea level on the mountain foothills. The village sits on solid rock, with old mud houses topped by palm frond roofs, agricultural terraces carved into the slopes, and narrow alleyways connecting them. A viewing platform near the entrance frames the whole settlement and gives a sense of how the village is built into the terrain. The drive back to Muscat closes the day.
