The experience
The tour departs Muscat around 8:30 AM and heads inland to Nizwa, Oman's old capital. Nizwa Fortress sits at the center of the town: a military stronghold built to withstand sieges, now a museum showing the region's history. Walking through it, you see views across the ancient town and the mountains beyond. The fortress stands next to Nizwa Souq, a working marketplace where vendors sell jewelry, pottery, fish and meats. You have time to browse and pick up souvenirs if you want.
From there the route moves to Al Hamra, a village where residents still live much as they did generations ago. You walk through it with the guide, seeing how the community is organized around older ways of building and daily life. Then comes Misfah al Abryeen, a village at the base of Jebel Shams where the Falaj (a system of channels that brings water down from the mountains) feeds gardens and vegetation throughout the settlement. Marked footpaths crisscross the village. The guide points them out and you're free to explore at your own pace. Late afternoon, the group heads back to Muscat, arriving in the early evening.
The 4WD vehicle handles the mountain roads and rough terrain. You get water throughout the day, and the guide speaks English and can answer questions about what you're seeing. Pickup and drop-off happen anywhere in the Muscat area, so you don't arrange separate transport to meet the group.
