The experience

The day starts at the Nizwa Souq, where vendors set up from 5am selling fish, meat, vegetables, pottery, jewellery, handicrafts and souvenirs in authentic old market halls. Friday brings a livestock market where locals from nearby villages sell donkeys, goats, cattle, sheep and chickens in an open-air setting. The Souq closes by mid-morning, so timing matters if you want to see it in full swing.

From there you move to Nizwa Fort, the museum next to the Souq. Built in the mid-17th century by the Yaruba dynasty, it was designed as a military stronghold with passages, towers and traps built into the corridors to stop intruders. You can walk through the rooms and passages yourself. The fort also gives views across the ancient town and the surrounding mountains. Entry is separate from the tour price.

The afternoon takes you to Al Hamra to see the old village and its traditional homes, then on to Misfath al Abreen, which sits on a steep slope at the foot of Jebel Shams a few kilometres away. The village has old homes, narrow streets and a large Falaj system that supplies water to orchards, date palms and vegetable plots. Marked footpaths run through the village and surrounding area. The operator suggests spending at least 1.5 hours walking. Private air-conditioned transport covers the whole route, and bottled water is provided throughout.
