The experience

If you have a free afternoon and want to see the Dhofar region's most dramatic geology without arranging transport, this private tour covers five stops across the mountains in one loop. You start in Wadi Darbat, where a short walk takes you to the river's edge: the valley stays green year-round, and you can wade into the azure water or photograph the seasonal waterfall and the camel herds that cross here. From there the route climbs into the Jabal Qara range to reach Tayq sinkhole, a canyon-like chasm holding 90 million cubic metres of empty space. You walk around its rim and look down into the void.

The next stop is Tawi Attair, the Well of Birds, a 211-metre-deep abyss where the sheer drop defines the landscape. A short walk to the edge gives you the full view. Then you climb to the Jebel Samhan escarpment viewpoint at 1,340 metres elevation, where the Dhofar plain spreads below you and rare dragon trees grow in the rocky soil. The final stop is Hinae valley, home to the only baobab forest on the Arabian peninsula. The trees are enormous and unlike anything else in the region. Your guide speaks English, Czech, Arabic or Slovak, and the tour includes pickup from your hotel, bottled water and soft drinks throughout the day.
