The Experience

The car picks you up at 8am from your hotel and heads straight into Ubud village. First stop is the Monkey Forest, a nature reserve where around 340 crab-eating macaques live across four separate family groups — you'll see them moving through the trees and temples, and it's the kind of place where you have to stay alert because they're curious and will steal anything loose. After that you walk through Ubud Palace in the center of the village, where the local royal family still lives and cultural performances happen most nights, then spend time in the Art Market itself, which is packed floor-to-ceiling with silver jewelry, batiks, wood carvings, sarongs and woven bags. The aisles are tight and it gets crowded, but that's part of what makes it real.

Then you drive up to Kintamani, which sits at 900 meters above sea level and takes about an hour from Ubud. The air gets noticeably cooler and you get views across to Mount Batur and Lake Batur spread out below — restaurants line the ridge and most people stop for lunch here because the volcano view while you eat is genuinely the point. After lunch you head back down and stop at Tegalalang Rice Terrace, where the paddies drop away in stepped layers down the valley. There are swings set up, zip lines if you want them, and the whole place is set up for photos, but it's also just a place to stand and look at how rice farming actually works on a slope. Your last stop is Tegenungan Waterfall, about half an hour southeast of Ubud — you drive through green rice fields on both sides of the road and then walk down to the falls themselves.

The whole tour runs as a private vehicle with an English-speaking driver who handles the route and timing, so you're not waiting for other groups or sticking to a rigid schedule. The car is air-conditioned, which matters when you're moving between the cool highlands and the humid lowlands. You get picked up and dropped back at your hotel, so there's no figuring out transport or negotiating with taxis at the end of a long day.
