The Experience

I didn’t expect to start my day in Bali by fumbling with a sarong at Batuan Temple. Our guide, Wayan, showed me how to tie it properly (I got it wrong twice—he just grinned and fixed it). The stone carvings were older than anything I’ve seen back home. There was incense in the air, sweet and smoky, and the temple gates looked almost too perfect for photos. It was still early but already warm enough that the stone felt hot under my feet.

Tegenungan Waterfall was louder than I thought—it drowned out everything else for a minute. We stood close enough to feel the spray on our faces (my shirt was damp for hours after). Some kids from the village were swimming below; I wanted to join them but just watched instead. Wayan pointed out some birds overhead—kingfishers, he said. I’m not sure I actually saw them but nodded anyway.

The Tegalalang Rice Terrace is something you see on postcards, but walking there is different—the green is so intense it almost hurts your eyes. We saw farmers bent over in the mud, waving as we passed. I tried the jungle swing after hesitating for way too long (my stomach dropped, then I laughed so hard I nearly lost my hat). There’s this moment when you’re swinging out over the edge and all you hear is wind and maybe your own heartbeat. Still think about that feeling sometimes.

Later we wandered through Ubud’s art market—so many colors and smells: wood polish, clove cigarettes, fruit I couldn’t name. A woman selling batik scarves smiled when I tried to bargain in Bahasa Indonesia (she laughed gently and gave me a better price anyway). The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary was our last stop; monkeys everywhere—one tried to steal Wayan’s water bottle. He just shrugged like it happens every day.
