The experience
The day starts at 3 PM when a jeep picks you up in Jaisalmer and heads toward the desert. On the way, you stop at Khaba Fort, where the landscape opens up to empty villages and the flat expanse beyond, then at Jassery, an oasis and lake that breaks the monotony of the terrain. From there the jeep takes you to the camel point, where you mount your own camel (each rider gets one) for the ride into the Thar Desert. The camel trek runs roughly 90 minutes, timed to reach the dunes as the sun sets.
Once the sun drops, a bonfire is lit on the dunes and dinner begins. The meal is cooked fresh in front of you: dal, mixed vegetables, rice, chapati and spiced sides, plus dessert. You have a choice here: sit back and relax on the dunes while the food is prepared, or step in and help the camel drivers cook over the fire. Either way, you eat under the open sky. The jeep returns you to Jaisalmer around 10 PM.
