The Experience

It’s not every day you get to walk through a village where the sound of your jeep arriving brings out curious kids and shy smiles from women peeking behind doorways. Our guide, Raju, grew up nearby and seemed to know everyone—he waved at an old man weaving a rope, who grinned back with a toothless smile. The air was dry, but you could smell wood smoke and fresh chapati from somewhere close. We sat on a charpai under a neem tree, sipping sweet chai while goats wandered past. It’s hard not to feel like you’re part of something special when the whole village pauses to greet you.

Lunch was in a mud-walled house with a family who’d clearly cooked for guests before—dal, rice, and vegetables straight from their tiny garden. The kids giggled at my attempts to eat with my hands. I asked before snapping photos; people here appreciate it if you do. After lunch, we hopped back in the jeep and headed out past fields dotted with acacia trees until the sand dunes finally appeared.
