Camels move slower than you'd expect, which is exactly why the sunset lasts so long.

A half-day camel safari in Jaisalmer's Thar Desert combines a ride through sand dunes at sunset with a stop at Kuldhara Village, a 13th-century settlement abandoned by its Paliwal Brahmin inhabitants. Hotel pickup and drop-off by jeep, an English-speaking guide, and bottled water are included. The tour runs about five hours and suits all fitness levels, though it's not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with spinal injuries.

Step-by-step itinerary

Camel Safari and Desert Sunset

  • Drive from Jaisalmer to Kuldhara Village
  • Explore Kuldhara abandoned village
  • Ride camel in the Thar Desert
  • Watch sunset over desert dunes
  • Drive back to Jaisalmer hotel

The experience

Five hours is enough time to leave the city, cross into the desert, and watch the light change across the dunes without rushing back. The day starts with a jeep pickup from your hotel and a drive to Sam Desert, where you'll mount a camel and ride out into the Thar: the world's 18th-largest desert, covering 200,000 square kilometers across India and Pakistan. The pace is slow and deliberate, which gives you time to notice the landscape rather than just pass through it.

Kuldhara Village sits between the city and the deep desert. Established around the 13th century, it was once prosperous, built and inhabited by Paliwal Brahmins. Now it's abandoned (the buildings still stand but the people are gone), and walking through it raises questions about what happened and why. The guide will explain the history, but the silence of the place speaks louder than any story. After Kuldhara, you head deeper into the dunes for the camel ride and the sunset itself, which turns the sand orange and gold and then fades to purple.

The tour ends with a jeep drive back to Jaisalmer and a drop at your hotel. You'll have water throughout the day. Depending on which option you book, you can add dinner at a camp on the dunes, or combine the camel safari with a jeep component if you want to cover more ground without spending the whole time on a camel.

Is this one for you?Choose this tour if you have only a half-day free in Jaisalmer and want to see both the desert and a piece of its history without committing to a full-day itinerary. The jeep transport to and from the dunes means you're not walking or riding the whole way, so the physical demand stays moderate even though camel riding itself requires balance and comfort with the animal's gait.

What is Kuldhara Village and why is it abandoned?

Kuldhara Village was established around the 13th century and became a prosperous settlement built by Paliwal Brahmins in the Jaisalmer district. The village is now abandoned, with its structures still standing but no residents. The tour includes a stop to walk through it and learn its history from your guide.

How long does the camel ride last during this tour?

The full tour runs about five hours from hotel pickup to drop-off. The camel safari itself takes place during the afternoon and early evening, timed so you're riding as the sun sets over the Thar Desert dunes.

Is this tour suitable if I have back or spine problems?

The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, as camel riding involves movement and jolting that can aggravate such conditions. If you have concerns about your back, discuss them with the operator before booking.

What's included in the price, and what costs extra?

Hotel pickup and drop-off by jeep, entry to Kuldhara Village and the Thar Desert, the camel safari itself, and bottled water are all included. Meals, travel insurance, and driver tips are separate. If you book the dinner option, that meal is added to your package.

Does the tour operate in the same way regardless of which option I choose?

The core experience (Kuldhara Village, camel safari, and sunset) is the same across all options. The difference is whether you add dinner at a camp on the dunes, or combine the camel ride with a jeep safari to cover additional ground in the desert.
