The Experience
Someone’s handing me a cup of chai before I even realize I’m thirsty. The jeep ride from Jaisalmer is still buzzing in my bones, but now there’s just wind and the soft crunch of sand as our camels shift their weight. Our guide, Sadiq, grins as he shows us how to tie the scarf—mine keeps slipping over my eyes and I keep laughing. We pass fields where kids wave at us like we’re astronauts. Then those old stone ruins appear—Kuldhara, Sadiq says, where everyone vanished overnight. He tells it so casually I almost miss the goosebumps.
The camel safari isn’t what I expected—there’s no caravan of tourists, just us and a couple of locals who seem half amused by our attempts at camel etiquette. The desert isn’t empty either; it smells faintly like cumin and dust, with little green patches where goats pick at something invisible. At sunset we reach these perfect sand dunes (Sadiq calls them “our secret spot,” though I suspect every guide has one). Chai again, this time sweeter, and snacks that taste smokier than anything back home. Someone starts cooking dinner over a tiny fire while the sky goes pink and then dark enough that you can actually see the Milky Way. I didn’t expect to feel so small or so awake at once.
Sleeping outside is weirdly comfortable—a mattress right on the sand, heavy blankets against the chill. There’s this silence after everyone stops talking that feels thick enough to touch. In the morning someone’s already making breakfast when I open my eyes; the sun hasn’t fully cracked over the dunes yet but there’s light everywhere anyway. Riding back on camel feels slower somehow—I guess nobody really wants to leave right away.
