The experience
The safari departs from Jaisalmer at around 2:30 PM by jeep, stopping at the Natural Oasis and Khabha MT Fort on the way to the dunes. Once you reach the desert, you mount a camel for a 45-minute ride into the rolling sand. The guides meet you with a warm welcome and healthy animals, and the pace lets you take in the landscape without rushing through it.
At the dunes you watch the sunset, sip tea and coffee, and eat snacks while the light fades. Dinner is prepared over a wood fire (a traditional veg curry with chapati, rice and dal), and you sit around the bonfire with the group before settling into your bedding on the sand. The night is the centerpiece: you sleep under the stars with the desert stretching in every direction, the sky so full of light it needs no other description.
Morning brings tea and coffee when you wake, followed by breakfast of jam and toast, fruit, eggs, noodles and biscuits. A second camel ride of about 30 minutes takes you back toward Jaisalmer, where a jeep collects you for the return drive, arriving by 10 AM. The whole experience trades the pace of a city day for the rhythm of the desert: two sunsets and sunrises compressed into one overnight stay.
