Sleep Under Stars in Jaisalmer's Thar Desert, Not in a Hotel Room

You ride camels twice across the Thar Desert, sleep under the stars on a proper bed, and eat meals cooked by your guides—all without the infrastructure that usually comes with overnight tours. Hotel pickup is available, groups cap at eight, and the full experience runs from early morning one day through late morning the next. Book at least two people to start.

The Experience

Most desert tours end before sunset. This one starts at 6:30am, runs through the afternoon, and doesn't finish until 11:30am the next morning—which means you're actually out there when the light goes soft and the temperature drops. A jeep takes you from Jaisalmer to the camel point, where you meet your guides and get a proper breakfast before mounting up. The first ride lasts two and a half to three hours, one person per camel, through scrubland and rocky outcrops dotted with small temples and farmers' fields. It's not the postcard version of the desert.

After lunch in the shade, you ride again for about two hours until you reach the dunes. Sunset happens here—you watch it from the ground, then eat a traditional dinner cooked by your guides. Then comes the part that changes how you think about the place: you sleep on a bed with a mattress, pillow and blankets, but there's no tent, no roof, just stars directly above. The Thar Desert at night is quiet in a way that feels almost loud. Morning brings a sunrise camel ride of about ninety minutes, breakfast after that, and a visit to the Serene Oasis and Khaba Fort on the way back to town by jeep.

Groups stay small—two people minimum, eight maximum—so you're not part of a convoy. The guides cook everything on-site, and they'll work with dietary needs if you let them know at booking. Bring sunscreen, a hat, long sleeves; there are no facilities out there except the desert itself. If you're traveling solo, contact them and they'll try to pair you with another group. Shower facilities are available back in Jaisalmer if you want to clean up before heading elsewhere.

What’s included

Your overnight experience includes hotel pickup from Jaisalmer (or a pre-arranged meeting point), a jeep ride to the camel point, breakfast before the first ride, two camel rides across the Thar Desert, lunch and traditional dinner prepared by your guides, a night sleeping under the stars on a bed with mattress and blankets, a sunrise camel ride the next morning, breakfast after sunrise, and a visit to the Serene Oasis and Khaba Fort on the return jeep to town. Shower facilities are available in Jaisalmer if you wish to refresh before or after the tour.
