3-Day Accra, Cape Coast & Kumasi Tour: Castles, Canopy & Culture
Walk the canopy 40 meters above the forest, then learn to weave kente cloth by hand

The tour includes a guide in English, all entrance fees, private transfers, and lunch each day. Children from age 10 are welcome. The canopy walk trek is steep and tests fitness, but the walk itself across the treetops is accessible to most visitors. The Experience
The tour opens at Elmina Castle on the Cape Coast, a whitewashed medieval fortress where thousands of enslaved Africans saw their homeland for the last time. You walk through the dungeons where people were held before transport across the Atlantic, visit the castle museum, and stand in the courtyards where these transactions took place. The weight of the history is the point: this is where the Atlantic slave trade was organized, and the guide walks you through what happened within these walls.
From there you move inland to Kakum National Park for the canopy walk. The trek to the start is steep and will challenge visitors who are not fit, but once you reach the walkway itself, you're suspended about 40 meters above the forest floor, moving between the treetops. The park holds a rich mix of birds and plants. The bellied bustard and other species live in the canopy. After the walk, you travel to Royal Senchi Resort on the Volta Lake, one of the world's largest lakes, for a boat cruise across the water.
Day two centers on Accra's historical sites. You visit the National Museum of Ghana, set in pleasant grounds with displays on Ghanaian culture and material heritage. The W. E. B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture, which houses his personal library and research materials and shelters his grave; Independence Square, the second-largest city square in the world after Tiananmen Square in Beijing, with capacity for 30,000 people and monuments to Ghana's independence struggle; and Makola Market, the country's largest trading center and the epicenter of Ghanaian commerce and social life. You also visit the drum market and spend two hours learning African drumming rhythms with instruction from a local drummer.
On day three in Kumasi, you learn to weave kente cloth on ancient hand-operated looms (the same method weavers have used for generations), and stamp Adinkra symbols from scratch using traditional techniques. Adinkra cloth carries symbolic messages and wisdom. You carve symbols into calabash gourds, press them into dye, and stamp patterns onto cloth. If you are part of the African diaspora, you visit Adanwomase for a traditional naming ceremony: you receive a Ghanaian name and certificate based on your date of birth, along with an adornment of tailored Ghanaian cloth. The tour ends with a visit to a cocoa farm to see how the crop is grown and harvested.

Is this one for you?The tour picks you up in Accra and handles all transport between cities, so you don't need a car or need to arrange your own way between the sites. If you're staying in Accra or Cape Coast without transport, this is how you reach the inland sites and the canopy walk. If you're part of the African diaspora, the naming ceremony in Kumasi makes this version distinct from shorter Cape Coast-only tours.

What exactly happens inside Elmina Castle?
Elmina Castle is a whitewashed medieval fortress on the Ghana coast where enslaved Africans were held in dungeons before being transported across the Atlantic. You walk through those dungeons, visit the castle museum to see artifacts and crafts, and stand in the courtyards where the slave trade transactions took place. The guide explains the history of what happened within the fortress walls.
How steep is the canopy walk trek, and can I do it if I'm not very fit?
The trek to the start of the canopy walk is steep and will test visitors who are not fit. Once you reach the walkway itself, the walk across the treetops at 40 meters above the forest floor is a different experience. You move between the trees rather than climbing. If you have concerns about the trek, discuss them with your guide when you book.
What do I actually make on the weaving and stamping days in Kumasi?
You learn to weave kente cloth on ancient hand-operated looms, using the same technique local weavers have used for generations. You also stamp Adinkra symbols onto cloth by hand: you carve symbols into calabash gourds, press them into dye, and stamp the patterns yourself. Both are working lessons where you create something to take with you.
Is the traditional naming ceremony part of every tour, or only for some travelers?
The traditional naming ceremony in Kumasi is designed for African Americans and people from the Caribbean. You receive a Ghanaian name and certificate based on your date of birth, along with tailored Ghanaian cloth as an adornment. If you are part of the African diaspora and interested in this experience, mention it when you book.
What is included in the price, and what do I need to bring or pay for separately?
The tour includes private transfers throughout the three days, all entrance fees to the castles, museums and parks, lunch each day, guide service in English, and all taxes. Bring comfortable walking shoes for the canopy trek and the market visits, and bring cash if you want to purchase items at the markets or from local artisans. The guide can advise on what is available.
