The Experience

The day starts with pickup from your Accra hotel and a drive to Cape Coast Castle, where you'll walk through the rooms and dungeons of a structure that has stood since the Portuguese built it in 1555. The castle sits on the Gold Coast and now operates as a historical museum run by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board; the gift shop sells Ghanaian arts and crafts. From there you move to Elmina Castle, erected by the Portuguese in 1482 and the first European trading post on the Gulf of Guinea. It's the oldest European building still standing below the Sahara and carries the weight of its role in the Atlantic slave trade—a destination many African American travelers visit to connect with their heritage. The film "Cobra Verde" was partly shot here in 1987.

After the castles, you head inland to Kakum National Park, Ghana's most visited attraction site. The main draw is the canopy walkway, a suspended bridge that runs 40 meters above the rainforest floor and gives you a view of the forest and wildlife from a vantage point most visitors never reach. The walkway is the centerpiece of the park and the reason many travelers book this tour.

Your private guide speaks English or French throughout the day. The vehicle is air-conditioned, and you'll have WiFi on board. Bottled water and snacks are provided, though lunch is not included in the tour price. The group stays under 100 travelers. Pickup and drop-off at your hotel are included, so you don't arrange your own transport.
