The Experience
The day starts with a drive from your hotel to Cape Coast, roughly two and a half hours through the landscape. At Kakum National Park, the canopy walkway is the centerpiece—a suspended bridge 30 meters above the forest floor that lets you move through the treetop level instead of walking below it. As you cross, the guide points out medicinal trees, African grey parrots, hornbills and the butterflies the park is known for. The walkway itself is the vantage most visitors come for, and the height changes what you see.
After the park, you'll drive to Elmina for lunch and a break before the afternoon visit to St George's Castle. The castle is a UNESCO heritage site built by the Portuguese in 1482 as a trading post, later captured by the Dutch and expanded when the slave trade replaced gold commerce. The tour takes you through the grim dungeons, punishment cells, and the Door of No Return—the passage through which enslaved people were forced onto ships. You'll also see the turret room where the British imprisoned the Ashanti king Prempeh I for four years. The guide walks you through the structure and its history; the weight of the place is in the architecture and the rooms themselves.
