The Experience
The day starts before dawn with pickup for the drive to Kakum National Park, where the canopy walk suspends you above the forest floor among the plant and animal life of Ghana's Central Region. From there the tour moves to Elmina Castle, the first colonial structure built in sub-Saharan Africa and the site where the history of the trans-Atlantic slave trade took its most brutal shape. A guide leads you through the castle's chambers and dungeons, then into the Elmina fishing village to see how the community lives today on the same coast where captives were once held before transport across the ocean.
After Elmina, the route turns to Cape Coast Castle, built by the British and used as a holding point for Africans bound for the Caribbean and the Americas. The two castles frame the same history from different colonial perspectives and different moments in the trade. Between the sites, you stop at Oasis Beach Resort in Cape Coast for lunch and time to rest before the final castle visit.
The tour runs 10 to 12 hours total and departs at 6am. Your guide speaks English throughout, and the vehicle is air-conditioned. All entrance fees to the parks and castles are included, as are bottled water and WiFi on board. Pickup is included from your accommodation.
