Step-by-step itinerary

Visit slave trade sites and nature park

  • Walk through Assin Manso Slave Market
  • Visit Cape Coast slave dungeon
  • Explore Kakum National Park and canopy walkway
  • Tour Elmina Castle and learn history
  • Enjoy 45-minute boat cruise on Benya Lagoon

The experience

You arrive at the Assin Manso Slave Market in the Central Region, where enslaved Africans from across Ghana and neighboring countries were held and auctioned before the forced march to the coast. A guide walks you through the "Slave River," the site where men and women were bathed and given their last moments of rest before the journey to the dungeons. The market stands as one of Ghana's most significant heritage sites, a place where the scale and human cost of the trans-Atlantic slave trade become concrete.

From there, you move to Elmina Castle itself, built in 1482 and the oldest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa. Unlike Cape Coast, which has hosted diplomatic visits, Elmina has drawn figures like Steve Harvey and Samuel L. Jackson. The castle is the largest slave dungeon on the coast and the birthplace of Catholicism in the Gold Coast, with the first Catholic church still at its center. After the tour of the dungeons, a boat is arranged for you: a 45-minute cruise on Benya Lagoon, the historic waterway that splits Elmina into two parts. The captain navigates past one of the largest fishing markets, showing the living geography of the town.

Before returning, you stop at Kakum National Park, a 30-minute drive inland from Cape Coast. The park protects 375 square kilometers of Ghana's largest remaining rainforest, home to over 200 plant species per hectare and 650 butterfly species. The main draw for most visitors is the canopy walkway, which rises more than 40 meters above the forest floor. This is where the tour shifts: after the weight of the dungeons and the lagoon's history, you walk through pure nature and have space to process what you have learned.

Is this one for you? This is a guided tour with a private vehicle and an English-speaking guide, so you move at a set pace through four distinct sites rather than choosing your own route. It suits someone visiting Ghana for the first time or making a dedicated journey to understand the slave trade's geography and legacy, since the guide frames each stop as part of that history and connects them to questions about social injustice today.

Top questions

What exactly is the Assin Manso Slave Market, and what will I see there?

The Assin Manso Slave Market in the Central Region was a major holding and trading center where enslaved Africans from across Ghana and neighboring countries were auctioned before being marched to the coast. Your guide walks you through the "Slave River," where enslaved people were bathed and allowed rest before the final journey to the dungeons: a site designed to offer deep insight into the human cost of the slave trade.

When was Elmina Castle built, and why is it different from Cape Coast?

Elmina Castle was built in 1482, before the United States was founded, making it the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. Unlike Cape Coast, which has been visited by American diplomats, Elmina has hosted American celebrities and is known for its role as the cradle of Catholicism in the Gold Coast, with the first Catholic church still standing at its center.

What happens on the Benya Lagoon boat cruise?

After the Elmina dungeon tour, a 45-minute boat cruise takes you across Benya Lagoon, the historic waterway that divides Elmina into two parts. The captain guides you past one of the largest fishing markets, showing how the lagoon shaped the town's geography and economy.

What is the canopy walkway at Kakum National Park?

Kakum National Park's canopy walkway rises more than 40 meters above the forest floor, allowing you to walk through the rainforest at treetop level. The park protects 375 square kilometers of Ghana's largest remaining rainforest, home to over 200 plant species per hectare and 650 butterfly species.
