The experience
The tour opens at Assin Manso, a sacred site where enslaved people underwent a final ritual before the castles. Here they were fed, cleaned and branded with hot irons to mark ownership or confirm duty paid: marks that scarred the shoulder, breast or upper arm. The river itself became a place of remembrance. Today it holds the reburied remains of the first diaspora members to return to Ghana through the "door of return," including Lady Crystal from Jamaica and Samuel Carson from New York, alongside descendants from Barbados whose reburial symbolized emancipation and reconnection to the continent.
Cape Coast Castle served as both a slave holding point and the seat of British colonial rule across West Africa. The tour includes the museum and the dungeons where captives waited for shipment to the New World. Elmina Castle, the final stop, carries the same history of the transatlantic trade and the Door of No Return: the threshold through which millions passed. A professional guide walks both castles, explaining the architecture, the trade routes and the lives held within.
The day runs 10 to 15 hours with pickup and drop-off within Accra, an air-conditioned vehicle throughout, and bottled water provided. The guide speaks English or French. Children from age 5 are welcome. Lunch is not included, so plan a meal stop along the route or bring provisions.
