Accra City Tour: Makola Market, Museums & Independence SquareDiscover Accra’s top sites—Makola Market, National Museum, Independence Square—on a private city tour with local guide and air-conditioned car.★ 5.00 (8)5h–8hUS$ 100View › We were already halfway down the coast from Accra when our driver, Kwame, pointed out a fishing boat bobbing off Elmina’s shore. The salt air stung my nose—so different from the city. When we reached Elmina Castle, I didn’t expect to feel so much just standing in those stone corridors. Our guide Ama spoke quietly as we stepped into the slave dungeons; her words echoed against the walls. I tried to imagine what it was like back then but honestly, you can’t. The main keyword for this trip—Cape Coast & Elmina Castle day tour—doesn’t really prepare you for that feeling.
Afterwards, we wandered through the fishing market. Fish drying on racks, kids laughing and chasing each other between nets. Ama laughed when I tried to greet an old fisherman in Fante (I definitely butchered it). Lunch was simple—grilled tilapia with spicy shito and rice right on the beach. The ocean breeze made everything taste sharper. I still think about that view sometimes, how ordinary it felt for everyone else eating there.
Kakum came later—sudden green everywhere and this thick, humid air that stuck to my skin. The canopy walkway looked scarier than I’d pictured (photos don’t do it justice). Walking above those trees with birds calling below…my hands were sweaty but I didn’t want to rush it. Someone ahead joked about monkeys watching us from somewhere unseen. On the drive back, Ama shared stories about her grandmother’s childhood near Cape Coast. We all got quiet for a bit after that—just listening to tires hum against the road.
