The experience

The tour starts with pickup from your hotel or residence at 6 am, then a three-hour drive south to Cape Coast in a private air-conditioned vehicle. Once there, a guide leads you through Cape Coast Castle and its dungeons. The rooms where enslaved Africans were held before being forced onto ships bound for the Americas. The Door of No Return, now called the Door of Return, is the actual passage they walked through. After the castle tour, lunch happens at the restaurant inside the castle grounds, where you sit overlooking the sea. On clear days, dolphins pass by while you eat.

The second half of the day moves to Kakum National Park, about an hour away. The Canopy Skywalk is a suspended walkway strung between the tallest trees in the forest, roughly 40 meters above the ground. You walk across it hoping to spot birds and wildlife moving through the canopy. The hike to reach the walkway can be steep and is not suitable for people with mobility challenges or a fear of heights, so the tour offers the option to skip this part and return to Accra earlier if you prefer. Either way, the vehicle brings you back to your hotel before dark.

The tour is private, meaning no other travelers join you. Just your group and the guide. Bottled water is provided throughout the day. Because traffic between Accra and Cape Coast can be unpredictable, the guide may suggest visiting only one castle instead of both, depending on how the morning unfolds and what you want to prioritize. If you want a slower pace and time to explore all three major sites (both castles and the canopy walk), the operator offers an overnight package at a beach resort.

Top questions

What happens if it rains?

It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.

What exactly is the Door of No Return at Cape Coast Castle?

The Door of No Return is the actual stone passage inside Cape Coast Castle through which enslaved Africans were forced to walk before boarding ships to the Americas. It now stands as a memorial and is called the Door of Return, honoring the journey of reconnection and homecoming.

How challenging is the Kakum Canopy Skywalk hike?

The Kakum Canopy Skywalk requires climbing to reach the suspended walkway, which sits roughly 40 meters above the forest floor. The hike itself can be steep and is not recommended for travelers with mobility challenges, spinal injuries, or a fear of heights. If heights or hiking are not for you, you can skip this part and spend more time at the castles instead.

Will I have time to visit both Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle in one day?

Both castles can fit into the day, but traffic and your own pace at each site may mean visiting only one. The guide will suggest the best option based on how the morning goes and what matters most to you. If you want to see all three major attractions without rushing, the overnight package gives you the leisure to do it.

What is included in the price, and what do I need to pay for separately?

Hotel or residence pickup and drop-off, the private vehicle, the guide, bottled water, and all park fees and taxes are included. Lunch at the castle restaurant is not included in the tour price, so you pay for your meal separately. Gratuity for the guide is also your choice.

How long is the drive from Accra to Cape Coast?

The drive takes about three hours each way. The tour departs at 6 am and aims to return to Accra before nightfall, so the full day runs roughly ten hours from pickup to drop-off.
