Walk through three centuries of history, then step onto bridges suspended in the treetops

A full-day private tour from Accra to Cape Coast and Elmina, Ghana, with a guide who takes you through two UNESCO-listed slave castles and up into the Kakum National Park canopy. You enter Cape Coast Castle first, then hike uphill to walk seven suspended bridges 130 feet above the forest floor, and finish at Elmina Castle: the oldest European building south of the Sahara. An accredited guide leads each castle tour while your driver waits. The canopy walk is self-paced with a local guide on hand.

  • Tour Cape Coast Castle
  • Hike to Kakum National Park canopy walk
  • Walk across canopy bridges

The experience

Cape Coast Castle was built in 1555 as a Portuguese trading post and later became one of 40 slave castles on the Gold Coast. The castle sits on the UNESCO World Heritage List alongside Elmina, which the Portuguese erected in 1482 as the first European trading post on the Gulf of Guinea. Both castles operated as major stops on the Atlantic slave trade route before becoming museums. You'll enter each one with an accredited guide who walks you through the rooms, dungeons and the history of the trade that passed through these walls.

Between the two castles, you climb into Kakum National Park. After a short but steep uphill hike through thick tropical jungle, you reach the canopy walkway: seven separate bridges that hang from the trees, stretching over 1,000 feet total and rising 130 feet above the ground. The walkway was designed by Canadian engineers and Ghanaian builders and opened in 1995 to draw visitors to the park. A local guide is there to answer questions as you move across the bridges. The pace is yours. Wear enclosed shoes: no flip-flops or open-toed sandals.

The tour runs 10 to 12 hours from pickup at your Accra hotel. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water included. Entry to all three sites (the two castles and the canopy walk) is covered. The driver stays with the vehicle while accredited guides lead you through each castle, so you get expert context without a single guide rushing the group through.

Is this one for you?The 10- to 12-hour commitment means you leave early and return mid-afternoon, which works if your day in Accra starts and ends at the hotel. The private vehicle and guide let you move at your own pace through the castles and spend as long as you want on the canopy bridges, though the full itinerary, two castles plus the jungle hike, leaves little room for other stops in the region.

What exactly is Cape Coast Castle and why is it on the UNESCO list?

Cape Coast Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1555 as a trading post for gold and timber, then became one of 40 slave castles on the Gold Coast where enslaved Africans were held before being shipped across the Atlantic. It's on the UNESCO World Heritage List because of its historical significance to the Atlantic slave trade and its role as a major commercial fort in West African history.

How high is the Kakum canopy walk and what does the hike to reach it involve?

The canopy walkway sits 130 feet above the forest floor and spans over 1,000 feet across seven separate bridges. To reach it, you hike uphill through the jungle: a short but strenuous climb through Kakum National Park. Once you're up there, a local guide is available to answer questions as you walk at your own pace.

What's the difference between Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle?

Cape Coast Castle was established by the Portuguese in 1555 and later used heavily in the slave trade. Elmina Castle was built by the Portuguese in 1482 and is the oldest European building south of the Sahara. It also became a major slave trade hub and was seized by the Dutch in 1637. Both are UNESCO sites, but Elmina predates Cape Coast by 73 years and was the first European trading post on the Gulf of Guinea.

Is this tour physically demanding, and what should I wear?

The canopy walk requires a moderate level of fitness because of the uphill hike through the jungle to reach it. Wear enclosed footwear (hiking shoes or sturdy sneakers) not flip-flops or open-toed sandals. The tour is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health, or pregnant travelers.

How long does the whole tour take and what's included in the price?

The tour runs 10 to 12 hours from hotel pickup in Accra. Included are the air-conditioned vehicle, bottled water, fuel, entry to Cape Coast Castle, the Kakum canopy walk, and Elmina Castle, plus an accredited guide at each castle site. Your private driver picks you up and drops you back at your hotel.
