Step-by-step itinerary
Historic castles and nature walk
- Hike Kakum National Park canopy walkway
- Visit Elmina Castle
- Tour Cape Coast Castle
- Walk to river for slaves' last bath
The experience
You start at Kakum National Park, a tropical rainforest spanning about 375 square kilometers. After hiking up from the visitor center, you step onto the Canopy Walkway: a series of suspended nets and wires strung 50 meters above the forest floor and stretching 350 meters through the canopy. The walkway is secured and built to hold you safely while you move through the treetops. The view down into the forest and out across it is the whole point of the climb.
From there, the tour moves to the castles. Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, was the first trading post on the Gulf of Guinea and later became a major hub of the slave trade. You walk through both the male and female dungeons: the holding cells where enslaved people were confined before being transported across the Atlantic. Cape Coast Castle, a few kilometers away, is a larger commercial fort and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The dungeons here follow the same layout and purpose. Both sites carry the weight of that history plainly: the poor conditions, the narrow cells, the routes the captives took to the ships. A guide walks you through each space and explains what happened there.
The tour is private, so the pace and stops are yours to set within the day. You travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with bottled water provided. Pickup is included. If you choose the Slave Dungeons and Nature Tour option, you get both the Canopy Walkway and the castle dungeons. The Slave River and Dungeons Tour focuses on the castles and the river where enslaved people took their final bath before transport. Lunch is not provided, so plan for a meal break during the day.
