The tour starts at Black Star Square, the monument to Ghana's independence with its garden and the imposing black star of Africa at the top. This is where the journey into the country's modern history begins—the site where the Gold Coast Regiment soldiers were memorialized after their deaths during the Second World War. From there, the guide moves the group toward the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum and Memorial Park, dedicated to Ghana's first president and a figure the BBC voted African of the Century.

Osu Castle, also called the Christiansburg Castle or Fort Osu, sits on the Atlantic shore and carries the weight of Ghana's colonial past.
