The experience
The drive to Kakum takes three hours through the historic Denkyira Kingdom. Kakum National Park spans 360 square kilometers of tropical rainforest and shelters over 40 large mammals, 400 bird species, and countless butterfly and plant species. Once you arrive, you choose your own pace: either a 2-kilometer nature walk through the forest to see medicinal plants and wildlife, or the canopy walkway. Seven bridges strung 330 meters across the treetops, suspended 100 feet above the forest floor. The choice shapes the rest of your morning.
After Kakum, the tour moves to Cape Coast Castle, built by the Swedes in 1653 and later controlled by the British. Your guide walks you through the dungeons and explains the castle's role in the slave trade, and you'll see the West African Historical Museum, established by the Smithsonian Institution in 1994. Then you travel to Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482: the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. Here you enter the male and female dungeons where enslaved Africans were held, and learn about the Door of No Return, the final exit point for those who were shipped across the Atlantic. Both castles demand time to absorb. The guide contextualizes what you're standing in.
Lunch is at your own cost at a restaurant the operator recommends. The return to Accra is a scenic drive that gives space to process the day. Total time on the road and at sites is 12 hours from pickup to drop-off.
