The experience
The drive from Accra takes two and a half hours along the palm-lined Atlantic coast, with your guide narrating the history and culture of the towns and villages you pass. You arrive at Elmina township by 9am to tour Ft. St. Georges Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482 and standing for over 530 years as one of the largest slave forts in the world. The castle's dark dungeons held enslaved Africans before they were shipped across the Atlantic. Walking through it means confronting the scale and mechanics of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade directly.
By 11:30am you move on to Cape Coast Castle, which began as a Swedish lodge before the English seized and expanded it from 1665 onward. The Smithsonian-mounted museum and the dungeon tour end at the Door of No Return: the passage through which enslaved people were forced onto ships. Two slave bones exhumed from Jamaica and the USA were returned through this door and interred at Assin Manso an hour away, which changed its name to the Door of Return. During their 2009 visit to Ghana, President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama commissioned a plaque here that you will see.
Lunch is a break at your own cost before the return drive to Accra, arriving by late afternoon. The tour runs about ten hours total and requires at least moderate physical fitness. Dress is smart casual.
