The experience
The drive from Takoradi Port to Cape Coast takes you through Sekondi's European Town, where your guide points out the old colonial High Court, commercial buildings and Fort Orange: structures that anchor the region's trading history. You pass Monkey Hill and its adjoining wetlands, a pocket of virgin forest in the centre of the city, before arriving at Cape Coast Castle. The castle itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Inside, a conducted tour takes you through the dungeons where enslaved Africans were held before deportation, and through the West African Historical Museum, which contextualizes the castle's role in the trade.
Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in 1482, is the oldest and largest European structure in sub-Saharan Africa and also a UNESCO site. You walk through its grounds and dungeons as part of the same guided experience. On the return to port, the tour includes a stop at Elmina Fishing Harbour for photographs and a panoramic drive through Elmina Township, giving you a view of the town beyond the historical sites.
The entire excursion is eight hours, timed to fit within a single port call. Private transportation means you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle rather than waiting for a group coach, and a live guide, available in five languages, travels with you throughout, answering questions as you move between sites. All entry fees, taxes and transport from the port are included in the price.
