The experience
The tour starts with a 2-hour drive from Takoradi port along the coastline, passing forts built centuries ago. On arrival in Elmina, you get an hour-long guided walk through the castle itself: a structure the Portuguese built in 1482 and used as a slave dungeon. The guide explains its role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the history written into its walls and holding cells. After the castle, you walk through the colonial-style homes of Elmina township, then down to the fishing harbor and the fish market, where you can watch market women at work and talk to them about daily life there.
Lunch comes at a local restaurant where the kitchen uses ingredients sourced from the region. After an hour's break, you drive to Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the best-preserved fortresses on the coast. Another hour-long guided tour takes you through the castle and its dungeons. The place where enslaved people were held before being shipped across the Atlantic. The return drive to Takoradi takes 2 hours. If time allows, the guide can stop at Takoradi Central Market on the way back.
The vehicle is air-conditioned and the tour is wheelchair accessible throughout. A live guide speaks English or French. Bottled water is provided, and all entry fees and taxes are included in the price.
