The experience
Elmina Castle, built by the Portuguese in the 1400s and later controlled by the Dutch and British, stands as the largest and oldest slave dungeon connected to the trans-Atlantic slave trade in sub-Saharan Africa. The tour walks you through the castle's dungeons and chambers, then moves into the 700-year-old Elmina township itself: a living museum where a 35- to 40-minute walk covers the economic, political and cultural layers the town holds. You'll see the old quarters bombarded by the British, the fishing market, Dutch merchant houses from the 17th and 19th centuries, and the Dutch cemetery with grave markings that trace the stories of merchants who shaped the Gold Coast.
Cape Coast Castle, built by the British in the 1600s, holds underground dungeons that once held as many as a thousand enslaved Africans awaiting export. The tour discusses the trans-Atlantic slave trade and its political and socio-economic impact on Ghana, moving beyond the physical structures to the human and historical complexities that shaped the country and the world. Quame, your guide since 2015, frames these conversations so visitors develop new ways of understanding African history and the legacies that persist today.
The day ends at Kakum National Park, a forest reserve gazetted as a national park in 1992. The canopy walkway (a 350-meter-long, 40-meter-high wood and rope structure suspended between seven trees and broken by viewing platforms) lets you move through the forest canopy itself. The park's flora exceeds 200 plant species per hectare in some areas. Hotel pickup and drop-off within Accra, all entry fees, an air-conditioned vehicle, fuel and bottled water are included. The tour runs 12 to 15 hours total.
