The experience
Nine hours covers the drive from Accra, two castle visits and a nature walk in Kakum National Park. The tour moves through Cape Coast Castle, built by the Swedes in 1653 and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, where your guide takes you into the dungeons and shows you the Door of No Return: the symbolic exit through which enslaved Africans departed. The West African Historical Museum is housed inside the same fortress. From there you travel to Elmina Castle, erected by Portuguese traders in 1482, where you explore additional dungeons and courtyards that witnessed centuries of the slave trade and colonial occupation.
After the castles, the tour enters Kakum National Park's rainforest. The main draw is the canopy walkway: a series of suspended bridges that put you 130 feet above the forest floor, moving through the treetops. A guided nature walk follows, where you spot plant species, wildlife and butterflies across the biodiverse ecosystem. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group between sites. Lunch is on your own, giving you the flexibility to choose from local Ghanaian seafood and coastal cuisine in the area.
