Cape Coast Castle & Kakum Park tour: Slavery history, canopy walk
Walk the canopy above Kakum's forest, then stand in the rooms where enslaved people were held before the ships.
A full-day guided tour from Cape Coast visiting the Castle (a UNESCO World Heritage Site central to understanding Atlantic slavery), and Kakum National Park, where a 15-minute walk leads to an aerial walkway through the canopy. The guide speaks English. Local transport and all entrance fees are included. Infants sit on an adult's lap. The tour suits all fitness levels, though the canopy walk is recommended for those working through a fear of heights.

The Experience
The Cape Coast Castle, built in 1652, is the smallest of Ghana's slave forts and the only one constructed specifically for the slave trade. The site holds the Door of No Return, through which enslaved people passed before boarding ships. In 1998, remains of two enslaved people from Jamaica and Barbados were brought back through that same passage, renamed the Door of Return, a symbolic gesture to their descendants. Walking through these rooms with a guide who can explain the history changes what the space means. This is not a museum display but a place where the guide helps you understand what happened there and why it matters to Ghana's story.
Kakum National Park, Ghana's second-largest, sits about 15 minutes' walk from the entrance. The canopy walkway (built in 1994 by two Canadians and six Ghanaians, and still maintained by three of those original builders) stretches 350 metres at a height of 40 to 50 metres above the forest floor. The aerial view shows you the forest as the animals living there see it. Most of the park's wildlife is nocturnal, so daytime visits tend to be quieter, though birds and reptiles are active year-round. The walkway is engineered for safety. The maintenance crew who built it are still there.
The tour runs 9 to 12 hours depending on how long you spend at each site. A guide meets you in Cape Coast, handles all transport between the two locations, and covers entrance fees and activity costs. You'll need to arrange your own meals, though the guide can suggest stops. Infants travel on an adult's lap. Children from age one are welcome.

What exactly is the Cape Coast Castle and why does it matter?
The Cape Coast Castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in 1652 as a trading fort and later used as a holding point for enslaved people before they were shipped across the Atlantic. It stands as one of Ghana's most important sites for understanding the history of slavery and the African perspective on that history. The guide explains the rooms and their purpose as part of the tour.
How high is the Kakum canopy walkway and what will I see from it?
The walkway sits 40 to 50 metres above the forest floor and stretches 350 metres, giving an aerial view of the canopy and the forest below. Most of the park's animals are nocturnal, so you're more likely to see birds and reptiles during a daytime visit, though the walkway itself offers a perspective on the forest ecosystem that ground-level trails do not.
How long is the walk to reach the Kakum canopy walkway?
The walk from the park entrance to the canopy walkway takes about 15 minutes and is suitable for all fitness levels, though the tour notes it is recommended for anyone working through a fear of heights.
Does the tour include meals and drinks?
Meals are not included. You'll arrange and pay for your own food and drinks during the day. The guide can suggest places to eat, and the tour's 9 to 12 hour duration allows time for a break.
What's included in the tour price?
The price covers local transport between Cape Coast and Kakum, entrance fees to both the Castle and the national park, the guide's support throughout the day, fuel and taxes. You provide your own meals.
