The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Accra and takes you to Aburi Botanical Garden, an eco-friendly site opened in 1890 that protects plant and animal species. The garden holds botanical plants from around the world, many planted by colonial governors and African leaders including Sir Gordon Guggisberg, General Obasanjo, and Queen Elizabeth II. Your guide walks you through the collection, explaining how these plants serve as food, medicine, spices and decoration: the practical uses behind each species.
Next is Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm at Akuapim Mampong, where the first cocoa tree in Ghana was planted in 1870. You'll see the full cocoa process: planting, harvesting, and fermentation, which produces the raw beans that Ghana exports or sells to manufacturers. Two of the original trees planted by Tetteh Quarshie himself still grow on the farm and bear fruit. Ghana leads the world in cocoa quality and ranks second globally in production volume after Ivory Coast.
The itinerary also includes Obosomase Waterfall in the Eastern Region, a two-part cascade flowing through forest that was home to indigenous Ghanaians 400 years ago. Reaching the falls requires a hike of about 25 minutes uphill to the clear pool below. The tour runs 5 to 7 hours total, with all entrance fees, local transport and guide support covered.
