The Experience

The day starts at Shai Hills Resource Reserve, where you'll see baboons, fenced ostriches and zebras moving across the plains. A museum on the grounds holds animal products (skins, bones, tusks) that show what the reserve protects. Your guide walks you through the reserve's history and explains why it matters to the region.

From there you board a boat on the Volta River for a cruise that lets you sit back and watch the water and the banks slide past. The route takes you under the Adomi Bridge, Ghana's only suspended steel bridge, which you'll walk across on foot before heading to Asenema waterfall. The waterfall sits beneath the Akwapim ridge and offers a chance to cool off and see the landscape from a different angle. The tour ends at the Akwapim botanical gardens, Ghana's oldest, spread across the hills with plants that have grown there for generations.

You'll also learn some Ghanaian traditional skills. The tour includes time to try beadwork and jewelry crafting, so you leave with something you made yourself. The guide speaks English throughout, and the vehicle stays air-conditioned during the drive between stops. Water is provided, and all entrance fees are covered in the price.
