experience

What’s the experience like?

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect to feel so much just stepping out of the car in Prampram. The air was thick and warm, but it was the quiet that hit me first — not silence exactly, more like a hush that made you want to listen. Our guide, Kwame, met us right by the entrance of the Nkyinkyim Museum. He had this way of talking about the place that made it feel personal, like he’d lived every story carved into the sculptures. I remember him pausing by one piece — rough wood under my fingers — and telling us how the artist used these shapes to speak about the trans-Atlantic slave trade. I tried to imagine what those ancestors felt crossing oceans they’d never seen.

We wandered between open-air installations and little pockets of shade where you could smell earth after last night’s rain. Sometimes Kwame would switch from English to Twi when he got excited describing an ancestor on the wall (I tried repeating one name and he grinned — “Not bad!”). The African Ancestral Wall itself is just a short drive away, but it felt like another world: faces painted huge across concrete, each one staring straight back at you. There was this one portrait — I wish I remembered her name — that made me stop longer than I meant to. Something about her eyes.

The whole day trip from Accra felt both heavy and hopeful. We had cold bottled water in the van (thankfully), and there was always someone waving or calling out as we passed by small roadside stalls. It’s not a long drive from Accra at all, maybe an hour or so depending on traffic, but it feels further once you’re standing among those stories. I still think about that view over the fields behind the museum — wide sky, red dust, laughter somewhere off in the distance. Not everything made sense right away, but maybe that’s part of why it sticks with me.
