The Experience

The tour starts in Accra and moves west along the coast, stopping first at Fort Good Hope in Breku to learn how the Dutch built a permanent trading post there in the 17th century. From there you travel to Fort Amsterdam in Kormantin, a World Heritage Site captured by the Dutch in 1665, then to Cape Coast Castle itself. Local guides meet you at the castle and walk you through the dungeons and the cannon-lined catwalks. Afterward you have time to explore on your own. The day ends with a visit to Fort Victoria, built by the English and later renamed for Queen Victoria, before you settle into your overnight stay at Mighty Victory hotel in Cape Coast town.

Day two takes you east to Elmina Castle, where another local guide leads you through the site before you have free time to wander. You'll then cross to Fort St. Jago on the hill opposite, tour it with a guide, and make a stop at Assin Manso Slave River: the final link in the slavery route from northern Ghana and the largest slave market before captives were taken to Cape Coast. The route ends at Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi, the royal seat of the Asantehene, the absolute monarch of the Ashanti kingdom, and at the Okomfo Anokye Sword site, where a guide explains the history and significance of the mysterious sword in Ashanti culture.

Your Star Tours Ghana guide and driver handle all logistics and entrance fees. The air-conditioned vehicle carries you between sites. You bring nothing but yourself. The operator donates all profits to Future Stars Ghana, a charity supporting over 150 orphans and destitute children.

Top questions

How does the tour trace the slave trade across these five different forts and sites?

The route follows the geography of the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade: it starts at Fort Good Hope in Breku, where the Dutch built their first permanent trading post, then moves through Cape Coast Castle and Fort Amsterdam on the central coast, crosses to Elmina Castle to the east, stops at Assin Manso Slave River (the largest slave market before captives were transported), and ends at Manhyia Palace Museum in Kumasi to show the Ashanti kingdom's own history and power.

What exactly happens inside Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle?

At both castles, local guides meet you and lead a tour through the dungeons and the upper levels where cannons line the catwalks. After the guided tour, you have free time to explore on your own at your own pace.

Where do I sleep, and what's included in the price?

You stay overnight at Mighty Victory hotel in Cape Coast town on the first night. The tour includes all entrance fees to the five sites, an air-conditioned vehicle, an English-speaking guide and driver, bottled water, a Star Tours Ghana t-shirt, free WiFi and hotel pickup from Accra.

Does the tour start and end in Accra, or do I need to arrange my own transport?

Pickup from your hotel in Accra is included, so you don't need your own car or to arrange separate transport to the first site. The tour ends in Kumasi after visiting Manhyia Palace Museum and the Okomfo Anokye Sword site.

What's the physical demand of this tour?

The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. You'll walk through forts and museums, climb stairs inside the castles and move between sites by vehicle, but there are no strenuous hikes or extreme conditions.
