The Experience
The first day takes you north from Accra through two craft villages before reaching Boabeng-Fiema. At Ntonso Adinkra Stamping Village, you'll see how artisans carve and stamp the ancient Ashanti symbols that give the cloth its name. In Adanwomase, weavers demonstrate the kente cloth tradition on hand looms: the same technique used for centuries. Then comes the naming ceremony: you meet the Queen mother and her elders, participate in the ritual, and receive a certificate along with a strip of kente cloth woven with your new local name. A visit to a local cocoa farm rounds out the day, explaining how the crop shaped Ghana's economy. You stay overnight at Sweet Gardens Hotel.
Day two is the Kumasi city tour. The Manhyia Palace Museum, residence of the reigning Ashanti king Otumfour Osei Tutu II, holds the kingdom's historic and cultural treasures. The Prempeh II Jubilee Museum tells the life and legacy of one of the great Ashanti kings. Then you walk through Kejetia Market, built in 1924 and now the largest open-air market in West Africa, with over 20,000 vendors and 8,000 stalls. A final stop at the Komfo Anokye Sword Site explains the sacred object that, according to tradition, holds the strength of the Ashanti kingdom. The return to Accra follows.
The guide speaks English throughout and travels with the group in an air-conditioned vehicle. Pickup and drop-off from your location are included, as are breakfast, all entrance fees, and unlimited bottled water. WiFi is available on board.
