The experience

The tour leaves Accra early and stops at Bridge View Hotel for breakfast (you pay separately), then continues to Shai Hills for morning wildlife watching: baboons, antelopes, birds and butterflies move through the reserve. A canoe ride on the Volta River follows, crossing Ghana's only steel arch bridge with views of the water below. The route then pushes into the inner Volta Region, where the landscape shifts to mountain valleys and forest.

Wli Waterfalls (Agumatsa Falls) is the centerpiece: you choose your own hike based on fitness and time. The lower falls is a straightforward 45-minute walk on mostly flat ground, with fruit bats nesting on the cliffs above. The upper falls demands a 3-hour hike with real stamina, or a 5-hour climb for those with serious endurance. Both end in pools cold enough to swim in. Mount Afadja, standing at 885 metres, is one of Ghana's highest mountains and sits near the Togo border. The climb is a separate outing from the waterfall hikes. At Tafi Atome, about 200 Mona monkeys live in protected forest. They're wild but often descend close to visitors when offered bananas. You can walk the 7 km trail from Tafi Atome to the nearby kente-weaving village of Tafi Abuipe, or take the 14 km drive. The evening brings drumming, dancing or stories around a bonfire.

You spend two nights at Wli Water Heights Hotel, a lodge positioned to show off the mountain views. On the final day, the tour includes Hohoe's open market (busiest on Mondays and Fridays), the Amedzofe Canopy Walkway with views of Ote Falls, and a hike up Mount Gemi: the highest habitable point in Ghana. The route ends with visits to Cedi's Beads and Aburi Gardens before the return to Accra. An air-conditioned vehicle carries the group between all sites. Lunch is included each day, and WiFi is available on board.

Is this one for you?Choose this tour if you want to hike to multiple waterfalls and mountains without arranging transport or logistics yourself. The guide handles the route, the vehicle moves between sites, and meals are included. The 3-day length lets you tackle Wli Falls at your own pace (from a 45-minute lower walk to a 5-hour upper climb), climb two major mountains, and spend time with the monkeys, whereas a 2-day version would compress the stops.

Top questions

What's the difference between the two Volta tour options at checkout?

One option includes a 2-hour motor boat ride on the Volta River. The other uses a canoe with a local paddler (motor boat costs extra if you choose that version). Both cover the same hiking sites, waterfalls, and mountain stays.

Can I choose how far to hike at Wli Waterfalls?

Yes. The lower falls is a 45-minute walk on flat terrain. The upper falls requires a 3-hour hike with real stamina, or a 5-hour climb if you want the most isolated option. You pick based on your fitness and time.

Do I need to be an experienced hiker to do this tour?

The tour is built for moderate fitness: you'll hike to waterfalls, climb mountains, and walk forest trails over three days. The operator notes that travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness, and the hikes range from easy to challenging depending on which waterfall route you choose.

What happens at Tafi Atome with the monkeys?

Tafi Atome is a protected forest where about 200 Mona monkeys live. They've been safeguarded for 200 years because locals believed they were messengers to the gods. The monkeys are wild but often come close to visitors when offered bananas. You can also visit the kente-weaving village of Tafi Abuipe nearby, either by a 7 km trail walk or a 14 km drive.

Where do I sleep on this tour?

You stay two nights at Wli Water Heights Hotel, a lodge positioned on the mountainside with views of the natural landscape. Gemi, the highest habitable point in Ghana, is visited as a day hike, not an overnight stay.
