The experience
You're picked up from your Accra hotel in an air-conditioned vehicle and driven to Lake Volta for a boat trip across the water to the Akosombo Hydro Plant. The two-hour journey gives you time to spot birds and take in the landscape. Admission to the plant is included. Back on land, you visit a local kente weaving factory to see how the traditional cloth is made and learn about the relationship between the community and the monkeys living nearby. You overnight at a standard hotel with a private room and clean bathroom.
Day two is built around two major hikes. You start early for the steep climb up Mount Afadjato, standing at 885 meters: the highest peak in Ghana. The reward on a clear day is a view across the surrounding highlands and forest. After descending, your guide takes you through coffee and cocoa farms and semi-deciduous forest on the way to Wli Falls, locally called Agumatsa waterfall. At 885 meters, it is the highest waterfall in West Africa. The forest around it is quiet and thick with bird calls. Along the route you also stop at a mushroom farm and watch residents at work preparing food and tapping palm wine, which you can taste if you want to.
Your guide speaks English throughout and points out the features of the landscape: the crops, the forest type, how the land is used. Breakfast and lunch are included both days, and you return to Accra in the evening. The vehicle is private, so the pace and stops are yours to shape with your guide.
