The Experience

The day starts at 8am with pickup from your hotel. Shai Hills is the first stop. A reserve where you walk through caves and across open ground looking for wildlife: monkeys, zebras, antelopes and birds move through the landscape. The hiking is steady but not technical. The caves are low enough that you duck through them rather than rappel or climb.

From there you head to Royal Senchi Resort on the shore of Volta Lake, where a boat takes you out past fishing communities and small islands. The Adomi bridge comes next: a long suspension bridge connecting the eastern and volta regions, with a viewing platform built into the structure where you can stand and look down at Akosombo town and the water below. At Akuse, a farming junction on the way back, you stop to buy fresh fruit and vegetables straight from local growers. The Animals Museum closes out the day with skeletons and exhibits about the wildlife you saw at Shai Hills and the history of the people who lived there.

Bottled water and snacks travel with you. The guide speaks your language and knows the stops well enough to answer questions about what you are seeing. The full loop takes 10.5 hours door to door.
