The experience
The day starts at Shai Hills Resource Reserve, where you hike marked trails through rock formations and scrubland to spot native wildlife: antelopes, baboons, monkeys and birds move through the reserve on their own schedule, so sightings depend on the time and season. The reserve also holds ruins from settlements the Shai people built before their relocation in 1892. Rock climbing routes here suit different skill levels, and the higher formations give views across the entire reserve.
After the safari portion, you drive to Lake Volta, a 400-kilometer stretch of water created when the Akosombo Dam was completed in 1965. The lake covers roughly 8,500 square kilometers and required the relocation of around 78,000 people when it flooded the former river basin. A boat takes you across the water where you'll see fishermen tending their nets and catches, and you'll have lunch either on the boat or at a lakeside spot, eating in the quiet away from the city.
The tour runs five to seven hours total and includes bottled water, lunch, all fees and taxes, and an air-conditioned vehicle with a live English-speaking guide. Hotel pickup is part of the booking, so you don't arrange transport to the starting point. The itinerary is flexible within the day's framework, and all areas are wheelchair accessible.

What animals might I see at Shai Hills?
Shai Hills Resource Reserve is home to antelopes, baboons, monkeys and a range of bird species. The wildlife moves freely through the reserve, so sightings are not guaranteed but are common on the trails and in the open areas.
How large is Lake Volta?

Is rock climbing required, or can I just hike?
Rock climbing at Shai Hills has routes for every skill level, so you can choose how much climbing you want to do. Hiking the trails through the reserve is part of the day regardless, and the rock formations are visible and accessible even if you don't climb them.

Lunch is included and served either on the boat during the Lake Volta cruise or at a lakeside location. Breakfast and dinner are not included, and alcoholic beverages are not part of the package.
