The Experience
The tour starts with airport pickup and a night in Accra, with time to walk Osu Oxford Street if your flight arrives early. From there, you head inland to Kumasi in the Ashanti Region to see Manhyia Palace Museum—the residence of the Asantehene, the king of one of Africa's most powerful ancient empires—and the Kumasi Culture Centre, which holds over 700 stalls of art and traditional clothing from across West Africa and beyond. The Bonwire Kente Weaving Village is your next stop, where weavers still make the traditional Ghanaian cloth by hand.
Day three takes you to craft villages around Kumasi: Ntonso, where artisans make adinkra cloth using ancient Ashanti symbols, and Ahwiaa, known for carved wooden stools, masks and fertility dolls. Then you travel to Boabeng-Fiema Monkey Sanctuary in the Brong-East Region, a village where mona and black and white colobus monkeys are considered sacred—the community's ancestors settled here in 1827 and the monkeys are part of the village's spiritual life. On day four, a guided walk through the sanctuary lets you observe the monkeys, and you visit the Monkey Priest who oversees the monkey cemetery. Kintampo waterfalls, one of West Africa's most dramatic falls, comes next, followed by Tanoboase Sacred Grove, the first settlement of the Bono people, where you hike through forest to caves at the top.
Day five moves south to Cape Coast in the Central Region. Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was one of the colonial buildings used to hold enslaved people before the Trans-Atlantic crossing. Kakum National Park follows, home to the famous canopy walkway; you walk forest trails to see the different tree species and wildlife. On the final day, you return early to Accra to visit Makola Market, one of West Africa's busiest open-air markets; Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, the tomb of Ghana's independence leader and first president; Independence Square, marking Ghana's freedom from British rule; James Town, the first British settlement in Accra, with its lighthouse and Usher Fort; and the art center before heading to the airport two hours before departure.
