The experience
The tour opens with airport pickup and a welcome dinner, then moves through Accra's landmarks on day two: the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre (where the American Pan-Africanist scholar spent his final years), the National Museum of Ghana, Makola Market where you can buy local goods, Kwame Nkrumah's Mausoleum, and the Arts Market. Day three takes you to Assin Manso Slave River, where enslaved people were bathed and branded before being marched to the castles. The site now holds the remains of diaspora members brought back through the "door of return." You then visit Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle (built in 1482, the oldest European structure in Sub-Saharan Africa), both of which held dungeons where captives awaited shipment across the Atlantic.
Day four brings you to Kakum National Park for a rainforest hike and a walk on the Canopy Walkway suspended 40 meters above the forest. You then transfer west to Axim Beach Resort. Days five and six center on Nzulezo, a traditional village built entirely on water where residents have lived for generations. You'll also visit Kwame Nkrumah's birthplace in the region. The final day is your return to Accra and airport drop-off. Throughout, you travel in an air-conditioned vehicle with a professional guide, stay in double-occupancy rooms, and receive breakfast each morning. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
The tour is designed to educate travelers about Ghana's role in the slave trade, the resilience of communities that survived it, and the country's natural and cultural heritage. A guide fluent in English or French accompanies the group, and children from age five are welcome. Pickup and drop-off within Accra are included, as are all entry fees and taxes.

Is this one for you?Seven days is enough to move slowly through the slave castles and Kakum without rushing, but it means you commit the full week: a day trip or weekend visit cannot cover these sites. Choose this length if you want time to absorb the history and see both the coast and the inland rainforest. Shorter tours in the region typically skip either the stilt village or the canopy walk.

Top questions
What languages is the tour guided in?
Live guide in English and French.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Youth (11 to 17 years); Child (5 to 10 years). Children under 5 can't be included in the booking.
What is the Assin Manso Slave River site, and why does it matter?
Assin Manso was the last place on African soil where enslaved people were washed, fed and branded before being forced to the castles for shipment across the Atlantic. It is now a sacred memorial site and burial ground for diaspora members and descendants from the Caribbean who have been repatriated to Ghana through the "door of return."
Can I walk the Kakum Canopy Walkway, or is it just a viewing platform?
You walk the Canopy Walkway yourself. It is a suspended bridge 40 meters above the rainforest floor, reached after a hike through the park. The walkway lets you move through the canopy rather than viewing it from below.
How does Nzulezo Stilt Village actually work? Do people really live there year-round?
Nzulezo is a traditional village built entirely on water with houses and structures resting on stilts. Residents have lived there for generations and continue to do so, maintaining their way of life on the lagoon.
Is there time to shop or explore on my own, or is every hour scheduled?
The itinerary includes stops at Makola Market and the Arts Market in Accra where you can buy goods and art. Lunch and dinner are not part of the tour, so you choose where and what to eat each day. The guide leads the group through the main sites, but you have free time at markets and some flexibility around meals.
