The Experience

"What time do you want to leave tomorrow?" Your guide asks as the sun sets over Humayun's Tomb on day one, and you realize you've already seen more of Delhi than most people do in a week. You picked your own pickup time this morning—anywhere between 7 and 11—and the car arrived at your hotel. From there, the day unfolded without rushing: Qutub Minar first, then the Lotus Temple's flower-shaped marble, a pass by the Red Fort and India Gate, the Presidential Palace's 330 acres of colonial geometry. By afternoon you were in Chandni Chowk, where the spice market at Khari Baoli—Asia's largest—fills the air so thick you can taste turmeric before you see it. Your guide knew which lane to take, which stall owner to greet. Then the drive to Agra, four hours in an air-conditioned car with water and a driver who knows the route.

Day two starts before sunrise. On day four you choose: drive back to Delhi, or drop at Jaipur Airport if your flight leaves from there. The car is waiting.
