The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell—cardamom and something frying—right there in Chandni Chowk. Our guide Rajesh laughed when I tried to pronounce “jalebi” (I definitely didn’t get it right). We squeezed into a rickshaw and the driver zigzagged through people carrying bolts of fabric and baskets of marigolds. I felt like I was inside a moving painting. The Jama Masjid rose above everything—so many pigeons wheeling overhead it almost looked like rain. I remember touching the cool marble steps; they were smoother than I expected.

By the time we reached Agra for our overnight stay, my head was spinning—in a good way. The next morning, before sunrise, Rajesh knocked gently (“You don’t want to miss this,” he said). Walking toward the Taj Mahal in that blue-grey light is still stuck in my mind. It’s quieter than you’d think; just footsteps and the occasional soft voice. When the sun finally hit the marble, it glowed peach for a second. I just stood there holding my breath. Later at Agra Fort, he pointed out tiny details in the stonework—stories about emperors and betrayals—and honestly, I lost track but loved hearing him talk.

The drive to Jaipur felt long but not boring—fields flickering past, chai stops where locals grinned at us over glasses of milky tea. Fatehpur Sikri looked almost unreal in the haze; red stone arches everywhere you turned. In Jaipur, our hotel had this faint scent of sandalwood (or maybe I imagined it after all those temples). Amber Fort was massive—I kept running my hands along cold walls while Rajesh explained how mirrors were used to catch candlelight. At Hawa Mahal, we watched women selling bangles by the road and kids waving from tuk-tuks. There’s so much color here it makes your eyes tired in a happy way.

I never thought three days could feel so full—or that I’d still be thinking about that sunrise or laughing about my failed attempts at Hindi greetings weeks later.
