The experience

On your first morning in India, the guide meets you in New Delhi and begins with Old Delhi's Jama Masjid, one of the largest mosques in the country, then moves through Chandni Chowk's crowded markets where spice vendors, silver jewelry stalls and shops selling traditional sweets line the narrow streets. The day unfolds through Raj Ghat, where a black marble platform marks Mahatma Gandhi's cremation site, past India Gate's war memorial, and into Humayun's Tomb, a landmark of Mughal garden architecture. You'll also see the Lotus Temple's distinctive lotus-shaped structure and the Presidential Palace before the drive to Agra, where you stay overnight.

The second day starts before dawn. You reach the Taj Mahal at sunrise: the ivory-white marble mausoleum on the Yamuna river's bank that Shah Jahan commissioned in 1632 for his wife Mumtaz Mahal. After breakfast back at the hotel, you tour Agra Fort, the former imperial residence and UNESCO World Heritage site. The drive to Jaipur includes a stop at Fatehpur Sikri, the city Mughal Emperor Akbar founded in 1569 and used as his capital from 1571 to 1585 to commemorate his military victories.

Your final day in Jaipur covers the City Palace complex with its Chandra Mahal and Mubarak Mahal buildings, the Hawa Mahal palace built as a screened wall so royal women could watch street festivals unseen, and Jantar Mantar, a collection of 13 architectural astronomy instruments. You'll stop for photos at Jal Mahal, the water palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake, and visit Amber Fort on the Aravali Hills before the drive back to Delhi, where the guide drops you at your preferred location.
